1. No person may use a recreational vessel unless each child under 13 years old on board is wearing an appropriate PFD approved by the Coast Guard unless: a. Each child not wearing such a PFD is below decks or in an enclosed cabin. b. The vessel is not underway. (Vessels that are anchored or tied to shore are not underway.) 2. No person under the age of 14 may operate a personal watercraft (PWC). A person at least 14 years of age but less than 16 years of age may operate a PWC if: a. The person is accompanied by a person at least 18 years of age who occupies the PWC; or b. The person possesses ID proof of age and a boating safety certificate or card indicating satisfactory completion of a National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating safety course. c. ID and boating safety certification must be produced upon request of an officer.
This age requirement became effective on November 1, 2005. The age requirement of 14 years does not apply to persons who were 12 or older on November 1, 2005.
Please note that the Harbour Village Marina Rules and regulations also require the use of PFDs on all children 12 and under at all times when on the dock ways. Parents shall not allow their children to run and play on dock ways. Gasoline Tax Refund available from the State of North Carolina!
Recreational boaters can apply for a refund of the state sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel that is purchased at a highway pump for use in their boats. This includes the fuel pumps located in the marina. The claims for this refund are filed annually. For information, go to www.dor.state.nc.us/forms/.
